Olive Tree Cultivator and Dry Stone Wall Builder

Apply as a volunteer at the Telašćica Nature Park on Dugi otok and help us restore centenarian olive orchards and dry stone walls.

 

Let's show our visitors the riches of Croatian tradition and its connection to nature in the light it deserves.

Duties and responsibilities

  •  renew abandoned olive orchards: cuts old trees and olive branches and remove weeds surrounding the olive trees
  • repair the ruined dry stone walls around the olive orchards
  • contribute to the protection and conservation of the cultural heritage of the Park

Volunteering period

1st October 2023 - 15th of October 2023

Working hours

Five hours a day (from Monday to Friday), from 8 am to 1 pm. The minimum volunteering period is one week, and the maximum is one month.

Requirements

  • comfortable with working outdoors
  •  a team player
  • experience with operating a chainsaw and mower (preferable, not a requirement)

Languages

Croatian or English. Volunteers from foreign countries should have at least a basic knowledge of English to be able to communicate with the Park staff and other volunteers.

Volunteering with a disability

The volunteer position is not suitable for people with disabilities due to fieldwork and lack of adequate housing.

Location

Volunteers will work in the olive orchards within the Park.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided and is free of charge. Volunteers will be housed in a common dormitory (each with two beds). The sanitary block and the Park restaurant are about 20 meters from the dormitory.

Meals

Food is provided free of charge. It includes two meals a day in the official Park restaurant.

Transportation

Local transportation within the Park is provided – the Park will ensure transportation from the volunteers’ housing within the Park to the workplace. Travel expenses of arrival to and departure from the Park have to be arranged by the volunteers themselves.

Leisure time

  • rent a bicycle, scooter, boat, etc. and visit the surrounding and wider area of the Park and Dugi otok
  • enjoy the local cuisine in restaurants, taverns, and cafés in the nearby Sali (7 km from the housing)
  • the Park itself has several restaurants, cycling lanes, and footpaths, pebbled and sandy beaches where volunteers can spend their free time
