This year as well, the Krka National Park has joined in the celebration of International Bat Night, an event that for years has been giving notice about the importance of preserving these extremely valuable inhabitants of natural habitats, who nevertheless are often victims of various misconceptions and prejudices.
This year's version of International Bat Night will be held on Friday, August 28th, at the Imperial Viewpoint, an attractive location overlooking the Skradinski buk waterfall. From 10 am to 5 pm, visitors of all generations can join in a series of educational and entertainment events through which they will be able to learn about the life, habits, and significance of these fascinating flying mammals, which are a strictly protected species in Croatia.
The important role of bats in the ecosystem will be presented through appropriate decorations and informative signs noting the basic characteristics of these animals and interesting facts related to them. The youngest will be able to test their knowledge and skills in interactive games such as "bat fishing", "bat hunting", and "blind polygon", while more creative visitors will be able to let their imagination run wild in the “bat corner”. The exploration of the bats' home will be of particular interest – i.e. the cave, where visitors will be able to learn everything there is to know about their habitat in an interactive way.
Bats play an important role in maintaining a natural balance, particularly in regulating insect populations, thereby significantly contributing to preserving an essential balance in nature. They are particularly effective in controlling mosquito populations, as they can eat as many as several thousand of these insects in one hour.
We are particularly happy about the great interest expressed by visitors about the International Night of Bats, as well as the opportunity to learn about these important inhabitants of nature in an attractive area by the Skradinski buk waterfall. In this manner, this event combines entertainment and education, and provides an opportunity to learn more about nature, and also increase awareness about the need for its preservation. According to previous research, at least 22 species of bats live in the broader area of the Krka National Park, out of a total of 35 species recorded as living in Croatia.
By celebrating International Bat Night, the Krka National Park has once again confirmed its commitment to preserving biodiversity and educating the public about the importance of every segment of the natural ecosystem. Because even such small, silent, and often misunderstood inhabitants of nature, like bats, play an important role in preserving a natural balance in our environment.
