Educational programs teach about floodplain forests and the importance of retention areas. After this school, no participant will fail to recognize the decisive benefits stemming from Lonjsko polje when the rains start threatening with floods. Knowledge about the effects of floodplain areas makes one realize what sort of benefits they can bring through nature-based flood regulation, guarding even Zagreb as the biggest city in Croatia.
Educational program White Stork in Čigoč
The program includes the following: arrival to the information center in Čigoč; a short lecture about storks; stork-spotting with binoculars; walk around the village and counting the nests; exploration of the courtyards led by an educational expert; return to the playroom of the Educational Center; filling out worksheets; visit to a traditional carpenter shop and souvenir stand. In the courtyard of the visitor center, young participants can engage in an interesting and educational game called Stork Adventure. Worksheets are adapted to age groups of participants – young children, senior school children and adults. The program has also been adapted to preschool (kindergarten) age group.
Having in mind the age of the visitors, special worksheets have been prepared for younger and for senior schoolchildren, and also for adults. When it comes to preschool children, there is a specially adapted program for that age group.
After the visitors get acquainted with the European Stork Village, what follows is a trip to the floodwater retention zone of Lonjsko Polje at the village of Mužilovčica, taking approximately 10 minutes by bus. Visitors then proceed to the plain in a brief 20-minute walk. In the plain, the expert guide will acquaint the visitors with some of the richness of the flora and fauna of the Nature Park. Visitors can observe and photograph the pastures with herds of horses, cattle and pigs.

Recommended time of year for visit: This program is on offer from April 1 until August 10, during the stay of storks in Lonjsko polje. However, the program can also be held after the migration of storks to warmer areas, on visitor demand.
Educational program Krapje – Architectural Heritage Village
The program includes the following: arrival to the information center in Krapje; a short lecture about the village with exceptionally well preserved traditional architecture created in the 18th and the 19th century, with the houses made of famed Posavina oak. A walk around the village follows, together with photographing and sightseeing of houses and courtyards. Participants fill out worksheets, assemble models of the Posavina house in the playroom, and visit the gallery and the souvenir stand.
Based on the wishes of visitors, it is possible to arrange a visit to the church of St. Anthony in Krapje. This educational program is usually combined with a trip to the flood retention area of Lonjsko Polje at the village of Mužilovčica.
A visit to the ornithological reserve of Krapje đol can also be arranged on demand.

Educational program Posavina Horse
Upon arriving to the Park information center in Čigoč or Krapje, visitors proceed to the Lonjsko Polje retention area at Mužilovčica in the company of a guide/educator. That is the site where numerous herds of Posavina horses are kept on pasture.
The Posavina horse, sometimes also referred to as the Croatian Posavac, is an autochthonous Croatian horse species. Because of its physiological characteristics, this horse species spends a good part of the year in nature, starting from early April, and frequently even before that, until the end of October. It is adapted to wetland habitats and resistant to heat and cold, drought and mud, snow and flood, as well as the onslaught of mosquitoes, flies and gadflies. Harsh habitat conditions have made the Posavina horse undemanding, resistant and robust, while at the same time shaping its docile, affectionate and sociable character.
Participants of this education program come in direct contact with this noble horse breed, filling out the worksheets afterwards.

Educational program Amphibians in Lonjsko Polje
Upon arriving to the information center in Čigoč or Krapje, visitors proceed to the wetland habitats of Lonjsko Polje in the company of a guide/educator.
Croatia is home to twenty amphibian species, and as many as 16 of them can be found in the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. Amphibians depend on water in their life cycle, and the Nature Park is a genuine paradise for them. The abundance of pools, small and large marshes, old side arms of the Sava River and canals enable the survival of many amphibian species. The most interesting and the loudest amphibian species are the frogs. In spring, after spending winter safely buried in the mud or under a tree, the frogs set out for the water to mate.
Visitors who take part in this program get to learn about the life cycle, food and calls of this species, and about the threats that it faces. There is a lot of fun in observing the amphibians and in solving practical assignments. Towards the end of the program, participants fill out worksheets and compete in the composing of a "frog rap" song.

Note: Rubber boots are compulsory.
Educational program Spoonbill – Bird with a Spoon
Upon arriving to the information center in Krapje, participants listen to a brief lecture on Eurasian spoonbills, and proceed towards the Krapje Đol ornithological reserve in the company of a guide/educator.
Spoonbills are some of the most unusual inhabitants of the Nature Park. After winter, these migrating birds return to Lonjsko polje as early as February, when they start preparing for nesting. Krapje Đol is the oldest ornithological reserve in Croatia, and the largest spoonbill nesting area in the country.
Taking into account the age group of visitors, participants in this educational program fill out worksheets and birdwatching diaries, and participate in the prize game Đolingo as well. Passionate birdwatchers can also learn how to use binoculars and telescope.
This educational program is usually combined with a visit to the architectural heritage village of Krapje.

Educational program Corncrake – Tireless Meadow Singer
The focus of this educational program is corncrake (Crex crex) - an endangered and protected bird species. The program is intended for senior elementary school grades, nature protection groups and high schools. The program begins at the Nature Park information center, with the introductory presentation of key information about the Park and a brief lecture on grasslands, corncrake biology, threats that the species is facing and methods of protection.
After that, field training in the company of a guide/educator takes place in the form of a workshop in nature, held on the grasslands of Lonjsko polje in the vicinity of the village of Repušnica, where natural corncrake habitats are located. This is where participants fill out worksheets and cover various topics (how to recognize the most frequent plant and animal species in Lonjsko polje; invasive plant species; traditional cattle breeding; mowing techniques aimed at the protection of corncrakes; etc.).

Educational program Lowland Riparian Forests in Lonjsko Polje
The main topic of this program is getting acquainted with the phenomenon of riparian forests in the Nature Park, with a particular emphasis of key tree species: pedunculate oak, narrow-leaved ash, European hornbeam, poplar and willow. The program is intended for senior elementary school grades, nature protection groups and high schools.
The program begins at the Nature Park information center with the introductory presentation of key information about the Park. After that, field training in the company of a guide/educator takes place in the form of a workshop in nature, held at the experimental and educational forest complex of Opeka at Lipovljani, owned by the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb. This is where various topics connected with the management, cultivation and protection of lowland riparian forests are covered. While touring the forest, children prepare a small herbarium with the help of their guide/educator, and they also work on preparing a document entitled "Adopt-a-Tree".

Educational program Sava River
Upon arriving to the visitor center in Krapje, participants listen to a brief presentation of the Nature Park and get acquainted with the architectural heritage village. After that, visitors embark on the educational tourist raft Vodomar with a professional guide.
Enjoying the attractive river landscape of the natural course of the Sava River, visitors get acquainted with the key characteristics of Croatia's largest river: water level dynamics; geomorphological and tectonic processes; natural vegetation and animal world (fish, birds, etc.); use of the Sava River and its historical importance. Experienced river boat commander reveals many interesting facts about the river along the way. At the end, participants fill out worksheets specially prepared for this educational program.
Target age group: Final elementary school grades; high school; university students; adults.

Special educational programs can be arranged on demand for all groups of visitors interested in specific natural science topics (high schools, faculties, ecological and other associations). One example of such programs is the educational program entitled Autochthonous Breeds in Lonjsko Polje Nature Park (covering Posavina horse, Turopolje pig and Slavonian-Syrmian-Podolian cattle).
